DRAWINGS

Created in my Manhatten studio

These pen and ink drawings were made for the New York Law Journal when I worked for the daily newspaper as a bylined illustrator. This position certainly enhanced my drawing skill for my greatest passion, painting.

I learned to draw in the late great Jack Potter's illustration classes at the School of Visual Arts. He insisted that if we had to use words, we didn't do the drawing right. He also demanded that we employ fine art techniques in our drawings, and that we draw from life rather than from photographs. He relentlessly reminded me that I was not drawing people, things or concepts, but rather shapes. "Think shape," was Mr. Potter's constant refrain. That was the major breakthrough in my learning how to draw.
